On The Waterfront:
Special event aboard a century-old vessel
Come to the coast of Red Hook for a revealing tour, talk and presentation aboard the Lehigh 79, a 1914 wooden barge on the National Register of Historic Places.
Learn how shipping and cargo determined South Brooklyn's development, and why the Lehigh 79 grew obsolete. Captain David's long, historic preservation crusade gave it new life as a floating museum, showboat, and symbol of the exciting, evolving Red Hook waterfront. He'll reveal the roles that Pete Seeger and other prominent activists played in its resurrection, beginning in 1985.
The museum is adjacent to Pier 44 Waterfront Garden offering exceptional views of the skyline, Statue of Liberty, bay and bridges. There are gardens, coastal pines and scenic seating areas.
Captain David started out as a juggler on Carnival Cruise Line's first ship, he'll inform as well as intrigue us. You'll also enjoy spectacular views, before and after.
The fee for the tour is a non-refundable $10.
