Walking tour of Irish "Five Points", Chinatown and Little Italy By GNPS Member Bill Kahn TOUR DESCRIPTION: This tour looks at the different historic waves of immigrants that shaped both Chinatown and New York City. Starting on Canal Street, we head south to the “Five Points”. There, we will discuss the mid- 1800s immigration of the Irish and the “Gangs of New York” (both real and in film). In Little Italy, we will investigate what remains of the Italian immigration in the late 1800s. Then we will visit the food stalls of market Street, lively Chatham Square, and mah jong players in Columbus Park, all reflecting the two different waves of Chinese immigration. After the tour, we will enjoy a traditional dim sum meal at an “old school” Chinatown restaurant. BEFORE THE TOUR: After you register, you will receive an email from Bill Kahn (billkahn140@gmail.com) that contains YouTube links to scenes from the movie, “Gangs of New York.” Seeing these film clips before your tour will enrich your tour experience. The email also describes the route and distance covered, timing of the tour and lunch, contact information and some history resources. Please note the 9:30am meet up time
