Discussion of The New York Times 1619 Project

The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

For this session, we will continue our discussion on “The Idea of America” by Nikole Hannah-Jones (pages 14–26) and also discuss "A Broken Health Care System” by Jeneen Interlandi (pages 44–45) and “Medical Inequality” by Linda Villarosa (pages 56–57).

At our last meeting, several people mentioned the value of the book White Fragility by Robin Diangelo. Here's a wonderful video of Robin Diangelo explaining her book. Please watch it if you have time.
