Walking Tour of Riverside Church, Columbia University and Grant's Tomb By GNPS Member Bill Kahn
Riverside Church is modeled after the 13th century Gothic cathedral in Chartres, France. Inside, we will see exquisitely detailed carvings in wood and stone and fabulous stained glass windows. We will also learn about it’s rich history of social justice and the Rockefeller family. Columbia University was founded before the American Revolution and moved to Morningside Heights in 1896. The Beaux-Arts campus planned by McKim, Mead & White features magnificent neo-classical buildings, interesting modern sculptures, and a wonderful view down the length of Amsterdam Avenue. Who is buried in Grant’s Tomb? Nobody. Instead, we will admire the majestic above-ground (!) sarcophagi of the 18th President of the United States and his wife Julia. This classical domed mausoleum also features interesting mosaics, bronze busts, and historic flags. There are several restaurant options for lunch at the end of the tour, including Italian or Chinese dumplings. WARNING: This walking tour involves multiple staircases. After you register, you will receive an email from Bill Kahn that describes the route and distance covered, timing of the tour and lunch, bibliography/resources, and contact information.
